Who knew? Chi lo sapeva?

Each day there's a new revelation... we noticed that it's nearly impossible to watch a DVD without being interrupted by Lorenzo's screams. Fifteen minutes? Maybe... but we're always interrupted. The problem might be trying to watch them during the evening - maybe it would be easier during the day when Lorenzo is a little calmer (the hours between 5:00 and 11:00 are a bit crazy!?)

We also found out that we use a ton of products
  • 38 oz cans of infant formula don't last
  • We feel like we're using a dozen diapers and 30-40 Pampers wipes each day
  • Soap... who would've expected it but, yes, we use gallons of soap to clean his bottles
  • And to use the soap, we use special brushes to clean the bottles... after 1-2 weeks, they fall apart.
  • Then there's detergent... we wash and wash his clothes.
But once we play with Lorenzo and see that he's enjoying himself everything... absolutely everything makes it worthwhile.

  • Poi c'e' detersivo... laviamo e laviamo i suoi vestiti.

Autumn is Here! Autunno e' Arrivato!

Just around the corner from our neighborhood is a Methodist church known for hosting an annual pumpkin patch. Since the weather was so perfect (if you live in Houston, you know what we mean), we decided to meet up with Vanessa and Abbilyn for some pictures. Well... Lorenzo decided he didn't want anything to do with the paparazzi... rather than hamming it up for the cameras, he decided to cry (or sleep). Oh well... we'll go back this weekend. At least we got a few shots...

Be... Almeno abbiamo scattato qualche foto.

Unmentionable diapers and more...

We've heard lots of stories about baby blowouts... vomit, projectile poo and many other "non-dinner table" topics. So far, we haven't had to deal with anything other than plain old poopie diapers... that can't be said for everyone.

Here are the details - Ecco i dettagli

OK... so Lorenzo is 10 pounds, 2 ounces... that's in the 67th percentile. He's also 21.5 inches long (although the nurse first measured him at 22 inches - 68 percent - so I'm not sure which is really correct). Anyway, that's right at the 50th percentile. I found a web page that allows you register and then keep track of growth long-term. Not too heavy considering that the other day he drank 29.5 oz of formula.

Vanessa and Abbilyn Have Arrived - Sono arrivate Vanessa e Abbilyn

Aunt Vanessa and Abbilyn, Lorenzo's cousin, arrived earlier this afternoon. We had a brief visit with them but they'll be staying with Lorenzo from Sunday until Wednesday. Here are a few photographs of our little Casanova.

Announcement at Church - Annuncio a Chiesa

Lorenzo is famous... he already has his name in print!? This past weekend, our church included his announcement in the weekly church bulletin.

Wine for Mommies - Vino per Mamme

Today I found a bottle of wine called "Mommy's Time Out", apparently marketed to moms... the back of the label says that the makers know that being a mom is a tough job and that the wine is intended to provide a break. Something like that. Anyway, it's produced in Italy and is made from 70% Garganega and 30% Pinot Grigio. Good stuff.

New Photos - Nuove Foto

Lorenzo was relatively busy this weekend... he dined at a French restaurant, he saw all his granparents, he enjoyed a cup of cappuccino (in a cup larger than his head)... what adventures! His nonna also found out Lorenzo's ferocity when he's hungry.

You never know... Non si sa' mai

It's 9:30 and we're sitting in a dark bedroom... Selena is seated with Lorenzo as he sucks away on a bottle and I'm writing this entry. If we're lucky, Lorenzo will sleep until 1:30... four hours. Let's hope for the best. Each evening is different... sometimes, he cries after he eats and we don't have any time to taste a little bite of dinner. Other evenings he's calmer and it's possible for us to eat and relax. I have a feeling that tonight is going to be a bit difficult... Thank God tomorrow is Sunday! Tomorrow morning I'll go to church to say hello to our friends while Selena stays with Lorenzo. I think we'll change roles next week.

A little Movie of Lorenzo - Un Piccolo Film di Lorenzo

A typical afternoon for Lorenzo. That sound you hear is a CD of "rain"... we're not quite sure if it works or if it calms him down. He continues to eat like a hungry bear - eating as much as a typical two month old. He's also very strong... changing a diaper is a little fight with kicks flying in every direction.

Yesterday we went to Giovanni and Allison's to watch a football game. Well... the Longhorns didn't win but at least we had a good time.

Robert, his daughter Allison and our friend Denice stopped by to say hello to Lorenzo. Amici sono passati per salutare Lorenzo.

Lorenzo's Adventures - Le Avventure di Lorenzo

Yesterday was quite an active day for Lorenzo... he visited the pediatrician at 10:00 and then took a little trip into the city... visiting his favorite Starbucks before heading to various stores. In the afternoon, he went for a walk in the neighborhood... a daily activity. Unfortunately, after a day full of adventures, he didn't want to sleep. He cried from 11:00 at night until 2:00 in the morning. Dang!?

Mamma mia!?

Eating Comes Naturally - Mangia... Eccome Mangia!

We're finding out that this baby boy has the appetite of a little lion... while other children of the same age are supposed to drink 10-14 oz of formula each day, Lorenzo is drinking upwards of 20 oz. And when he's hungry the rafters shake and he wakes up the whole neighborhood. Maybe it's a good time to invest in Mead Johnson, the company that makes Enfamil.

Learning as we go...

Last night was kind of a tough night for us and Lorenzo... one of those times when it's 3:00 AM and you look at your son and wonder, why is it that it's been 1 hour and 15 minutes and we can't get him to stop crying. Ugh!? Well, he's been sleeping since his 7:40 AM feeding (it's 10:15 right now) so we're getting a break.

Some of the surprising things we've discovered over the past 12 days...

  1. Swaddling is amazing at calming down babies... so are the other Five Ss... if you haven't read it and you have a newborn on the way, pick up The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD. Well worth the money.
  2. Babies tend to fart when they wake up... and when they really start crying. Speaking of crying...
  3. Forget home security systems - all you need to protect the house is the sound of a hungry baby
  4. And since we were just talking about farts, let's talk poop. I'm amazed how getting peed on and dealing with poop doesn't bother me. I thought it was going to be much worse. Maybe that will change when the diapers get smellier.
  5. Bottles, bottles and more baby bottles. I'm amazed that you have to wash a thousand bottles and their thousand parts a thousand times a day.
I'm sure there will be more new revelations as this week goes on but that's what I've figured out so far...
