What a bad father! The 30th of August? Really? I have to write more often...

Well, as you know, Massimo is supposed to arrive December 3rd. However, this big boy is almost ready. In fact, the doctor told us that he will be here by November 17th. Why? In part because Selena is already 2 cm dilated. Then... Massimo already weighs 6 lbs 10 oz. So, we're getting ready. Yesterday I put together Massimo's crib (he's going to sleep in the study) and we've bought diapers, formula, bottle brushes, etc. etc. etc. We're almost ready... almost.

Che disgraziato! 30 Agosto? Caspita...!? Devo scrivere piu' spesso...

Allora, come sapete, Massimo dovrebbe arrivare il 3 Dicembre. Purtroppo, questo bambino e' quasi pronto. Infatti, la dottoressa ci ha detto che arrivera' prima del 17 Novembre. Perche? In parte perche' Selena e gia' dilatata due centimetri. Poi... Massimo gia' pesa 3 kilogrammi. Allora, ci stiamo preparando. Ieri abbiamo costruito il lettino di Massimo (dormira' nello studio) e abbiamo comprato pannolini, latte formulato, spazzoline per i biberon, etc. etc. etc. Siamo quasi pronti... quasi.

I like that I can have little conversations with Lorenzo. Tonight, after dinner, I asked Lorenzo what he did Sunday morning while we were at church (our church offers day care for the congregation). He looked at me and answered "crayons". He's starting to understand past tense questions and you can see that he understands quite a bit and can say a sentence of 2-3 words. He repeats everything and speaks in Italian and English. In the meantime, our second son keeps kicking Selena... maybe he'll play for Juventus.

Mi piace che posso avere piccole conversazioni con Lorenzo. Stasera, dopo cena, ho chiesto a Lorenzo che aveva fatto Domenica mattina mentre eravamo a chiesa (la nostra chiesa offre un asilo per la congregazione). Mi ha guardato e ha risposto "crayons" o colori... Lentamente, si vede che capisce parecchio e incomincia a dire frasi di 2-3 parole. Ripete tutto e parla in Italiano e Inglese. Nel frattempo, il secondo figlio continua a dare calci a Selena... forse giochera' per Juventus.

One of the books I liked to read as a child was Barbapapa... even Lorenzo likes to read Barbapapa. Today I found a cartoon on YouTube that Lorenzo watched while eating strawberries and prunes.

Uno dei libri che leggevo quando ero piccolo era Barbapapa... anche Lorenzo legge Barbapapa ed oggi ho trovato un cartone animato su YouTube che ha guardato durante meredna. Lorenzo guardava la puntata mentre mangiava fragole e una prugna.

Tonight we decided to teach Lorenzo how to use a glass to drink milk. All in all, he probably spilled a few gallons of milk but he was good, even if he would occasionally spit out mouthfuls of milk everywhere. He had a nice plate of fish, asparagus and roasted fennel.

Stasera abbiamo deciso di insegnare a Lorenzo come si usa un bicchiere per bere latte. Tutto sommato, ha rovesciato almeno cento litri di latte ma era bravo, anche se sputava qualche sorso di latte dappertutto. Ha mangiato un bel piatto di pesce, asparagi e finocchio al forno.

Houston is enjoying some wonderful weather... cool sunny days and cold nights. Instead of staying at home, we decided to go downtown for a festival... various artists used pastels to create stupendous designs on the pavement. Since Lorenzo is on the verge of walking, it was hard trying to stop him when he wanted to walk on the masterpieces.

Houston sta' godendo tempo meraviglioso... giorni freschi pieni di sole e notti fredde. Invece di stare a casa, avevamo deciso di andare al centro per una festa... vari artisti usavano gesso per creare disegni stupendi per strada. Siccome Lorenzo sta' per camminare, era difficile fermarlo quando voleva camminare sopra i capolavori.

This weekend we were relatively busy... Friday night we went to a little Halloween party. Saturday, we went to the zoo to see the monkeys and elephants. That night, we went to Texadelphia to watch the Longhorns play (...and you know what happened). Then, today we went to church, lunch and then to a park. Lorenzo's on the verge of walking - we know he can but he won't let go of our hands.

Questo fine settimana eravamo abbastanza occupati... Venerdi' sera siamo andati a una festa di Halloween. Sabato, siamo andati allo zoo per vedere le scimmie e gli elefanti. Quella sera siamo andati da un ristorante per guardare una partita di football (mannaggia... abbiamo perso). Poi, oggi siamo andati a chiesa, pranzo e poi a un parco. Lorenzo sta' per camminare - pensiamo che ci riesce ma non lascia le nostre mani.

Thanks to the hurricane, we were forced to wait two weeks before celebrating Lorenzo's first birthday. This Saturday, we hosted a little football party with family and a few friends. Lorenzo had a great time with his little friends and, for the first time, tasted cake. Yum! Even Zio Dimitri celebrated his birthday.

Grazie al uragano eravamo costretti ad aspettare due settimane prima di celebrare il primo compleanno di Lorenzo. Questo Sabato, abbiamo festeggiato con famiglia e vari amici con una partita di "football". Lorenzo si e' divertito con i suoi piccoli amici e, per la prima volta, ha assaggiato torta. Anche zio Dimitri ha festeggiato il compleanno.

Three days after taking off his helmet, we went to get Lorenzo's first haircut. He was really good and behaved himself without crying. He no longer looks like a little savage (even if he sometimes acts like a little savage). We filmed his haircut and took a few pictures, too.

Today Lorenzo went out in his new Radio Flyer wagon - it's almost like the one I had as a kid. It seemed like he enjoyed himself since he wasn't "tied down" like in his stroller.

Oggi Lorenzo e' uscito nel suo nuovo carro rosso - e' quasi quasi come quello che avevo io quando ero un bambino. Sembrava che si era divertito perche' non era "legato" come nel passeggino.

Wow... it's been over two weeks since I've written any news. It seemed like each time I would think of writing an entry, I would later forget. Am I losing my mind? Well, now I'll write something. I can tell you that Lorenzo turned 10 months old and he weighs over 22 lbs, maybe a bit more. He's at least 30 inches long.

Next month, we'll be removing the helmet. Is his head perfect? No... but it's better. He has blonde hair that hides the flattest part of his noggin'.

His meals are becoming a bit difficult. Sometimes, he'll eat everything with his hands... he's able to eat little bits of chicken, fish, beef, cheese and various vegetables. He's really good. Today he had pieces of cherry and mango for snacktime and cod and asparagus for dinner. Other times, he doesn't want to eat... if you try to put some food near his mouth, he blocks the spoon with his hand and whines. Each meal is different and you never know how he will react.

Che fetente... sono piu' di due settimane che non vi ho scritto qualche novita'. Mi pare che ogni volta che pensavo di scrivere, mi dimenticavo. Sono rimbambito? Allora, adesso vi scrivo qualcosa. Vi posso dire che Lorenzo ha compiuto 10 mesi e pesa almeno 10 kili, forse qualche centina di grammi in piu'. E' lungo almeno 72 cm.

Prossimo mese leviamo il casco. E' perfetta la testa? No... pero' e' migliorata. Lorenzo ha i capelli biondini che nascondono la parte piu' piatta della testa.

I suoi pasti sono diventati un po' difficili. Certe volte mangia tutto con le mani... riesce a mangiare bocconcini di pollo, pesce, manzo, formaggio e vari vegetali. E' proprio bravo. Oggi ha mangiato pezzetini di cigliege e mango per merenda e per cena ha mangiato un po' di pesce e qualche bocconcino di asparagi. Altre volte, non vuole mangiare... se cerchi di mettere qualcosa vicino a la sua bocca, blocca il cucchiaio con la mano e fa' capricci. Ogni pasto e' diverso e non si sa' mai come reaggira'.

We just got back from Mexico... we brought Lorenzo to Zihuatanejo, a small town next to Ixtapa. He are a couple of films from the trip... the first is the stairway from our room at the Brisas Del Mar Hotel to the pool. The second was from Sunda when it rained most of the day. The third is of Lorenzo with his new friend, Federico.

A few weeks ago, we decorated Lorenzo's helmet just like an official Longhorn football helmet. On the side, we placed a small longhorn and the back includes a player number (number 10 was Vince Young) and the flag is just like the one worn by the team.

Qualche settimana fa' abbiamo decorato il casco di Lorenzo come il casco ufficiale usato dall'Universita' di Texas. Al lato c'e' un "longhorn" e la parte posteriore ha un numero (numero 10 era Vince Young, l'eroe della squadra dal 2005) e la bandiera e' come quella adossata dalla squadra.

A week ago Lorenzo started wearing his helmet - he'll have to wear it 23 hours a day. Poor little boy. The first was difficult since he was adjusting. At least he can get ready to be a football player. He's so strong that he managed to pull of the helmet once - the doctor said that he's only had it happen to 1-2 other babies. Smart kid.

Una settimana fa' Lorenzo ha incominciato ad adossare il suo casco - dovra' tenerlo adosso 23 ore al giorno. Poverino. La prima settimana era un po' difficile mentre si abituava. Almeno si puo' preparare per essere un giocatore di football. Lorenzo e' cosi' forte che una volta ha tolto l'elmetto. Il dottore ha detto che e' successo con solo 1-2 altri bambini. Intelligente, no?

Siamo Tornati da Roma - We're Back from Rome

We just got back from a trip to Rome to introduce Lorenzo to family and Italian friends. Lorenzo behaved himself very well - he was social and happy, he slept and ate well and he didn't have any problems with jet lag. Thank God, there weren't even any problems during the flights... the trip was really without stress. If you're planning to take a trip, absolutely positively book a seat for the baby - it's worth it.

Siamo appena tornati da un viaggio a Roma per introdurre Lorenzo a parenti e amici Italiani. Lorenzo si e' comportato benissimo - era socievole e allegro, ha dormito e mangiato e non ha avuto problemi con gli orari storti. Grazie a Dio, non c'erano problemi neanche durante i voli... il viaggio era senza stress. Se vuoi viaggiare con tuo bambino, vi consiglio di prenotare un posto per il bambino - vale la pena.

Lorenzo continues to try various types of foods... fruits, vegetables and even chicken! This morning he tried mango (not this mango) with some banana... dang he liked it! If you like to make your own baby food (less expensive and easy), Wholesome Baby Food is a great site.

Before I tell you how it went this past weekend, I have to tell you that Lorenzo returned to the pediatrician for his six month appointment. He weighed 19 lbs, 8 oz and was 27 inches long... about 75 or 80 percent larger than other boys. The pediatrician said that Lorenzo can eat just about the same food we eat - pureed or smashed and gradually (each food has to be introduced every three days. Gradual is key). The other day, he tried broccoli, carrots and cauliflower. He likes carrots... the cauliflower and broccoli? Well...

This weekend, we went out to the country to Round Top, a small town known for it's international antiques fair with over a thousand dealers... a massive festival. We stayed with friends of the family in their bed and breakfast - we had a great time and Lorenzo was very happy. As you'll see, he was full of laughs and smiles...

Prima che vi racconto com'e' andato questo fine settimana, vi devo dire che Lorenzo e' tornato dal pediatra per il suo appuntamento di sei mesi. Pesava 8.85 kg ed era lungo 68 1/2 cm... verso 75 o 80 percento piu' grande dei altri maschi. Il pediatra ha detto che Lorenzo puo' mangiare quasi quasi il stesso cibo che mangiamo noi - frullato o schiacciato e in moderazione (ogni cibo si puo' introdurre ogni tre giorni). L'altro giorno ha provato broccoli, carote e cavolfiore. Gli piacciono le carote... il cavolfiore e broccoli? Ma'...

Questo fine settimana siamo andati in campagna a Round Top, un piccolissimo villaggio noto per una feria internazionale di antiquarati con piu' di mille rivenditori... e' una feria immensa. Stiamo stati con amici di famiglia in la loro pensione - ci siamo divertiti e Lorenzo era molto contento. Come vedrete, era pieno di risate e sorrisi...

Six Months - Sei Mesi

Six months... goodness!? This past month Lorenzo flew for the first time and he used his passport in Mexico, he "swam" for the first time (and had a fun time), he started using a high chair like a big boy and today even drank from a cup for the first time. He's a big goofball that always laughs. He sits on his own and like playing with his toys - his favorite animal is a little French giraffe named Francois - he chews on it any time its in his hands.

Next week he'll be returning to the pediatrician. He just visited another doctor to check his head and it looks like he'll start wearing a helmet during the first days of May. He'll wear the helmet for two to four months, after which his head will be nice and round.

Sei mesi... caspita!? Questo mese Lorenzo ha volato per la prima volta ed ha usato il suo passaporto in Messico, ha "nuotato" per la prima volta (e si e' divertito), ha incominciato ad usare un seggiolone e oggi ha bevuto da un bicchiere per la prima volta. E' un grande fessachiotto che sempre ride. Sta' seduto e gioca con i suoi giocattoli - il suo pupazzetto preferito e una piccola giraffa Francese che si chiama Francois - Lorenzo la rosicchia ogni volta che la tiene in mano.

Prossima settimana tornera' dal pediatra. Ha appena visitato un'altro dottore per controllare la testa e pare che incominciera' ad adossare un casco nei primi giorni di Maggio. Adossera' il casco per due o quattro mesi ma, dopo che ha finito, la testa sara' bella rotonda.

I know it's been a few days (more than a week) since we've updated Lorenzo's blog. In part, it's because Lorenzo joined us on a trip to Mexico - his first trip. It was a trial trip before his big trip to Buenos Aires.

We went to Huatulco, an area a small bays in the south of Mexico - give or take, about 400 miles southeast of Acapulco - near Guatemala. The water was gorgeous (brimming with amazing fish) and the beaches were perfect. Lorenzo was very happy - he traveled well (without screaming during the flights), he ate normally and slept as if he was at home. It was just about a perfect trip.

So che e' qualche giorno (piu' di una settimana) che ho scritto qualcosa sul blog di Lorenzo. In parte e' perche Lorenzo ci ha accompagnato a Messico - il suo primo viaggio. Era una prova prima che partiamo per Buenos Aires.
Siamo andati a Huatulco, una zona di piccole baie nel sud di Messico - piu' o meno 650 km sudest da Acapulco e vicino a Guatemala. L'acqua era bellissima (strapiena di pesci spettacolari) e le spiaggie perfette. Lorenzo era molto contento - ha viaggiato bene (senza strillare durante i voli), ha mangiato normalmente e dormiva come se fosse a casa. Quasi quasi era un viaggio perfetto.

Lorenzo is growing and we're starting to see some little developmental jumps. He can sit up by himself for a few seconds... sometimes, when he slumps forward, he can straighten himself. He did it for the first time a week ago when we went to a park. It was a splendid day and we decided to lay down for a while in the shade since we were around the corner from the Menil. Unfortunately, after a while, Lorenzo started getting fussy since it was naptime.

Lorenzo sta' crescendo e si puo' sedere da solo per qualche secondo... certe volte, quando incomincia a cadere, si puo' riadrizzare. L'ha fatto per la prima volta una settimana fa' quando siamo andati a un parco. Era una giornata splendida ed avevamo deciso di sdraiarci per qualche momento nell'ombra. Purtroppo dopo un po', Lorenzo aveva sonno perche era tempo per il suo pisolino.

It was just Wednesday that Lorenzo turned five months old. He's starting to grab for everything that he sees - plates on the table, little toys and even bottles of water (he thinks they're his bottle of formula). A few days ago, he tried to drink from a water bottle (it was empty) and earlier in the week he wanted Selena's coffee (as I already wrote). With a bit of help, he can stand up - this little film shows Lorenzo practicing with Selena.

Questo Mercoledi', Lorenzo ha compiuto cinque mesi. Adesso cerca di prendere tutto quello che vede - piatti sul tavolo, giocattoli e anche bottiglie d'acqua (crede che sono i suoi biberon). Qualche giorno fa' ha cercato di bere da una bottiglia d'acqua (era vuota) e l'latro giorno ha voluto il caffe' di Selena (come vi ho gia' scritto). The weather on Saturday morning was gorgegous and it gave us the perfect reason to meet up with Vanessa and Abbilyn, Lorenzo's aunt and cousin, at the zoo. There were quite a few people but it wasn't completely overflowing.

Today Lorenzo ate solides for the first time - rice cereal mixed with a bit of formula. It was obvious that he didn't know what to do and the first time we tried the cereal, he wasn't very happy. This movie is from the second try. It seemed like if he chewed on the spoon a bit, he was calmer and ate a little bit of cereal. It will be a few days before he really eats well. It was hard filming him while giving him a spoonful of cereal - mommy was much better at it.

Era obvio che non sapeva che fare e la prima volta che abbiamo provato il cereale, non era molto contento. Questo filmino e dalla seconda prova. What news do we have about Lorenzo? Well, he finally rolled over from his stomach to his back. He did it today and he did it three times. Finally! We were starting to wonder. And, we're finding out he's ticklish - Selena found out while changing him and he can laugh and laugh.

Oh... and we can't recommend enough Brett Chisholm Photography for portraits. He took our family portraits last week and did a fantastic job. Lorenzo behaved really well. Here are three of our favorites.

Four Month Check-Up

So, today we went back to the pediatrician for Lorenzo's shots. He weighed 16 lbs, 12 oz (84th percentile) and was 25 1/2 inches long (70th percentile). Since he eats only four times a day (a real blessing - 8 oz a feeding) and he sleeps well, the pediatrician said we can start feeding him rice cereal - a bit ahead of the curve. We'll start once our camcorder arrives.

Allora, oggi siamo tornati dal pediatra per le immunizazioni di Lorenzo. Pesava 7,6 kg (piu' grande di 84 percento degli altri bambini) ed era lungo 64,8 cm (piu' lungo di 70 percento degli altri bambini). Siccome mangia solo quattro volte al giorno (una beatudine - 236 ml con ogni pasto) e dorme bene, il pediatra ci ha detto che puo' incominciare a mangiare cereali di riso. Incomincieremo quando arriva la nuonva cinepresa.

Quattro Mesi - Four Months

It's the 20th of January and Lorenzo is four months old. He'll be heading to the pediatrician tomorrow for his four month shots and a check-up. We partly celebrated by taking a little trip - a weekend at a resort near Austin. He traveled really well - in fact, he mostly slept both there and back.

The hotel, The Lost Pines Resort, is out in the country and located on the banks of the Colorado River. It's very peaceful although there is a lot to do. We pretty much decided to do a whole lotta nothing. In fact, we enjoyed the chance to just hang out, play with Lorenzo and just take it easy. We ate well while there and walked around quite a bit.

Lorenzo didn't sleep well - we think it's because he was in an unfamiliar place. You could see it in his eyes. He probably would've been fine with a few days to get acclimated. At least he was pretty happy when he was awake. Let's say this trip was practice before our big Argentina trip.

E' il 20 Gennaio e Lorenzo ha appena compiuto 4 mesi. Domani tornera' dal pediatra per qualche immunizazione. In parte, abbiamo celebrato con un piccolo viaggio - un fine settimana a un albergo vicino a Austin, quasi 200 km da Houston. Lorenzo ha viaggiato benissimo - in fatti, ha dormito duranta l'andata e il ritorno.

L'albergo, il Lost Pines Resort (i Pini Perduti o i Pini Scomparsi), e nella campagna e accanto a il fiume Colorado. E' molto tranquillo e c'e' tanto da fare, anche se noi abbiamo deciso di fare un sacco di niente. In fatti, abbiamo goduto l'opportunita di ciondolare, giocare con Lorenzo e stare tranquilli. Abbiamo mangiato bene e camminato spesso.

Lorenzo non aveva dormito bene ma ci pare perche era un posto strano. Forse sarebbe stato piu' comodo dopo qualche giorno pero' non aveva tempo di abituarsi. Almeno era abbastanza contento quando era sveglio. Diciamo che questo viaggio era in preparazione per Argentina.

Much to Do - Tanto da Fare

It's only Wednesday and it's already been a busy week for Lorenzo. Monday, Selena took Lorenzo do a play group with other babies from church. All of the babies were very young - Lorenzo was the youngest wile the oldest was only five months old. Lorenzo apparently had a good time.

Tuesday we went to a specialist to check out Lorenzo's head. It looks like we'll have to go back in March to talk about a helmet. If he has to wear one, he'll have to do so for a couple of months. It's not a severe case but it has to be fixed - what can you do?

Yesterday Lorenzo gave us a surprising little gift - he slept from nine o'clock at night until nearly six o'clock in the morning. Nine hours! What joy! It must be the gargantuan bottles of formula that he takes - now only four times a day. He actually made it until eight o'clock until he ate. He's really getting there.

Tonight my parents came over to watch Lorenzo while we had date night. My mom played with Lorenzo for a couple hours and now he's sleeping. A good night.

E' solo Mercoledi ed e' gia stata una settimana piena di attivita' per Lorenzo. Lunedi', Selena ha portato Lorenzo alla casa di una amica per giocare con altri bambini che conosciamo a chiesa. Tutti i bambini erano giovanissimi - Lorenzo era il piu' giovane e il piu' grande aveva solo cinque mesi. Lorenzo si e' divertito.

Martedi' siamo andati dal un'altro dottore per controllare la testa di Lorenzo. Pare che dovremo tornare in Marzo per discutere un casco. Se deve adossare un casco, dovra' averlo per qualche mese. Non e' grave ma si deve aggiustare - che si puo fare?

Poi ieri sera Lorenzo ci ha regalato una bella sorpresa - ha dormito dalle nove di sera fino a quasi le sei di mattina. Nove ore! Che gioa! Adesso mangia solo quattro volte al giorno e beve dei biberon immensi di latte formulato.

Stasera i nonni sono passati per guardare Lorenzo mentre siamo andati a cena. Nonna ha giocato con Lorenzo per quasi due ore e adesso sta dormendo.

Next Sunday Lorenzo will turn four months old. Each day, he keeps learning - he can pretty much put his pacifier in his mouth and he's able to grab small toys and teething rings. He can keep his head up high without any problem and can even control it when we fly around playing "superman".

Today Lorenzo went with us to Memorial Park for a nice long walk - Selena would run while I would walk with Lorenzo and then we would swap out - I would run and she would walk with the stroller. The weather was marvelous and there were a ton of people out running, walking and just soaking up the sun. This week we'll take Lorenzo to another doctor to check out his flat head. The possibility exists that he'll have to wear a helmet for two months. Better to fix it now...

Lorenzo decided he's going to play football for the Horns. Here he is in his warm-up suit.

Prossima Domenica Lorenzo compiera' quattro mesi. Continua ad imparare - quasi quasi puo' mettere il ciuccio in bocca e riesce a prendere piccoli giocattoli o anelli. Puo' tenere la testa in alto e riesce a controllarla anche quando vola mentre giochiamo "superman".

Oggi Lorenzo ci ha accompagnato al parco per una bella passeggiata lunga - Selena correva mentre io camminavo con il passeggino - poi io sono andato a correre mentre Selena camminava con il passeggino. Il tempo era meraviglioso e c'era un sacco di gente che correva, camminava e godeva il sole. Questa settimana porteremo Lorenzo da un'altro dottore per controllare la sua testa (la parte piatta). Esiste la possibilita' che dovra adossare un casco per due mesi. Meglio aggiustarla adesso...

I'm too lazy to think in two languages tonight so I'll just post this in English... Lorenzo continues to grow and eat like a champ. Lately, he's settled down to 5 feedings a day - much better than the old days when we had to feed him 8 or 9 times a day. He'll usually eat 6 oz. a feeding although today he had an 8 oz. feeding and a 7.25 oz. feeding. Wow!? Good news is that his feedings are nice and quick since he's using a size 3 nipple. Uhm, yeah... that's what 6 month old babies use. Otherwise, nothing groundbreaking right now although he drools like crazy... he'll work on his hands for a while and they'll be covered with slobber. Baby or little Golden retriever? Either way, he's a cutie, drooly or not.

My apologies as these photos should have been posted a few days ago... photos from New Year's Eve (at Gio and Allison's) and New Year's Day (at the zoo). Lorenzo did really well on the 31st and we had a good time until 9:30 before heading home. It was cold on the 1st but the weather was beautiful so we took Lorenzo to the zoo for the first time. He stayed bundled up in his stroller while we walked around.

Vi chiedo scusa perche dovevo mettere queste foto qualche giorno fa'... sono fotografie dal 31 Dicembre (da Giovanni e Allison) e il 1 Gennaio (dallo zoo). Lorenzo era ben comportato il 31 e ci siamo divertiti fino alle 21:30 - poi siamo tornati a casa. Il 1 Gennaio faceva freddo ma il tempo era bellissimo e abbiamo deciso di portare Lorenzo allo zoo per la prima volta. Lui e' rimasto ben imbottito nel passeggino.

Returning to the Hospital - Tornando all' Ospedale

Lorenzo had a pretty stressful morning today... we went with him to Texas Children's Hospital to perform some diagnostic tests on his kidneys. I can't quite explain everything that took place but essentially they were testing fluid in his kidneys to see if he had reflux... they did this with a catheder in his penis - poor kid! He was pretty livid and he cried his head off... it was no fun. Fortunately, everything looked fine and maybe the kidney problem has disappeared. We'll head back in March for an ultrasound and maybe, just maybe, we can close the chapter on the kidney story. Let's hope.

Lorenzo ha avuto una mattina molto stressante... l'abbiamo accompagnato al Texas Children's Hospital (un ospedale per bambini) per controllare i suoi reni. Non posso spiegare tutto che hanno fatto ma hanno controllato il fluido nei reni mettendo un tubo nel pipino - poverino. Era abbastanza furioso e piangeva... caspita quanto piangeva. Per fortuna, sembra che tutto e' normale e forse i problema con i reni e scomparso. Torneremo in Marzo per un'altro ultrasuono e forse questa storia dei reni sara' finita. Speriamo bene.

Thursday afternoon we took Lorenzo for a walk at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary right by our neighborhood. It was obvious that he was really happy walking with us in his Baby Bjorn.

Giovedi pomeriggio siamo andati con Lorenzo al parco botanico accanto al nostro quartiere. Era obvio che era molto contento quando l'avevamo portato a spasso nel marsupio.

After our walk, we stopped for a few pictures since we were all dressed for the Longhorn football game.

Lorenzo turned three months old on December 20th... it really is true that time flies (didn't I write that another time?). Three weeks ago, Lorenzo didn't do much other than sleep. Today he started batting away at a stuffed animal hanging from a baby gym. Each day brings a new discovery - who knows what will happen in the coming months.

Little Traveler - Piccolo viaggiatore

The other day, Lorenzo told us that he'd like to become a great explorer - traveling across the world. Therefore, today we went and applied for a passport for our little traveler. It should arrive in six to eight week so he can travel in April. We've also found out that Lorenzo can pretty much push his pacifier back when his mouth when it falls out. We're sure he can pull it out... he's been doing that for quite a while.

L'altro giorno, Lorenzo ci aveva detto che vuole diventare un grande esploratore - viaggiando attraverso il mondo. Allora, oggi siamo andati a prendere un passaporto per il nostro piccolo viaggiatore. Arrivera' in sei o otto settimana cosi' potra' viaggiare in Aprile. Abbiamo anche scoperto che Lorenzo quasi quasi puo' spingere il ciuccio dentro la bocca quando cade. Siamo sicuri che riesce a tirarlo fuori.

My goodness... guess who grew 2" in a month? This baby boy is growing and now weighs 14 lbs, 13 oz and is 25" long. Both measurements are over the 80th percentile. Who needs weights when you have a giant like Lorenzo?

On a totally unrelated note, we just tried a dream feed tonight since our pediatrician said it might help stretch his long sleep period into the morning. Anyone had any success? Last night, for example, he went 7 hours between feedings after his bedtime feeding and then 5 hours... not bad. Now, if we can only get that long stretch to coincide with our sleep.

Mamma mia... indovina chi ha cresciuto piu' di 5 cm in un mese. Questo bambino sta' crescendo e adesso pesa 6,75 kg ed e' lungo 63,5 cm. Tutte le misure sono piu di 80% degli altri bambini. Non e' necessario allenare con i pesi con questo gigante.

We're having fun now that Lorenzo can communicate with us... each morning, he's happy and full of smiles. During the day, he smiles and talks (when he's not eating, sleeping or crying). Here is a little film of Lorenzo while he was in a good mood.

Prior to tonight, Lorenzo's "record" meal was 6.25 oz in one feeding. Earlier today, he took a 7 oz. feeding and followed it up 4 hours later with another 7 oz. feeding!? Wow... and he's only 10 weeks old.

Two months... it's true that time flies. This baby keeps growing and he surprises us each day. He's started to smile, to hold objects and he "talks"... and how he talks. These are various photos from this week... as you'll see, Lorenzo joins us at the gym and he's always cute.

Due mesi... e' vero che il tempo vola. Questo bambino continua a crescere e ci sorprende ogni giorno. Ha incominciato a sorridere, a stringere oggetti e "parla"... quanto parla. Queste sono varie foto da questa settimana... come vedrete, Lorenzo ci accompagna alla palestra ed e' sempre carino.

Today Lorenzo went back to the pediatrician for his two month shots (you could say he was pretty mad... almost furious, particularly this afternoon). He continues to grow like a little weed - he weighs 12 pounds, 8 oz and is 23" long. Both over the 50th percentile although his weight is higher. Better that he eats. We're going to have to be careful with his head as he has a flat spot on the right hand-side... we'll have to use positioners in the daytime. He'll go back to the pediatrician in December to check his head and he'll also visit the urologist to check out his kidneys.

Oggi Lorenzo e' tornato dal pediatra per le sue immunizzazioni (era abbastanza arrabbiato... forse un po' furioso). Continua a crescere come una piccola erbaccia - pesa 5.67 chilogrammi ed e' lungo 58.4 cm. Dovremo stare piu' attenti con la sua testa perche la parte posteriore alla destra e' un po' piatta. Tornera' dal pediatra in Dicembre per controllare la testa e visitera' anche l'urologo per controllare i reni.

Well then... the ultrasound found that one of his kidneys is still dilated and that there is some type of fluid blockage. For the moment, we don't really know much else but we'll have an appointment with a urologist to understand what that means. We'll also visit the pediatrician this Thursday and he'll explain everything... we get the feeling it's not very serious.

Allora... hanno scoperto con l'ultrasuono che un reno e' ancora un po' dilatato e' c'e' qualche tipo di blocco di fluido. Per il momento, no sappiamo altro ma avremo un appuntamento con un urologo per capire che vuol dire. Visiteremo anche il pediatra questo Giovedi' e' ci spiegera' tutto... non crediamo che e' grave.

Yesterday afternoon we took Lorenzo to Texas Children's Hospital to get an ultrasound on his kidneys. You might recall that while Selena was pregnant, the doctors noticed his kidneys were dilated. He wasn't too thrilled with the whole process but, for the most part, the main reason he was upset was because he was hungry. This week we'll find out if he's doing better.

On a fun note, Lorenzo seems to be starting to smile... and it's not because of gas or because he's filling up his diaper. Each day he seems to "wake up" a little more... it's fun to watch him make his little developmental leaps.

Oh... and for our English-speaking readers, a few notes...

Huggies are not good diapers. I'd say that they leak 50% of the time. Maybe the issue is user error but if anyone wants about 100 free size 1 Huggies diapers, just let us know. Oh yeah... and we have about 50 or so N size Pampers since our "little one" outgrew them.
A few thoughts on baby clothing. Gymboree makes really good clothes... we like them although they do tend to be very "character-specific" (always have a cute penguin, donkey, crab, sheep, doggie, etc.). Their inventory turns over quickly and goes through sales so skip the clothing at regular retail price and go straight for the clearance racks. Carter's sells good quality basics, too, and their clothes often go on sale. Great place to find basic onesies, sleepers, etc., often at 50% off prices. Old Navy makes cute and reasonable priced stuff but it tends to run small whereas Gymborees tends to run large. Gap Baby, on the other hand, is a bit pricey (wait for stuff to go on sale) but it's good quality and soft clothing.

Ieri pomeriggio abbiamo portato Lorenzo da Texas Children's Hospital (un ospedale che specializza in bambini) per un ultrasuono sui reni. Come vi avevamo detto, quando Selena era incinta, i dottori avevano notato che i suoi reni erano dilatati. Lorenzo non gli piaceva il ultrasuono pero' direi che, piu' di tutto, era piu' arrabbiato perche aveva fame. Questa settimana scopriremo se i reni sono normali ho se sono ancora dilatati. Una bella novita'... sta' incominciado a sorridere... ed e' chiaro che non sta' sorridendo perche deve fare popo' o ha una puzzetta. Ogni giorno, Lorenzo si "sveglia" un pochino di piu'. E' divertente osservare i modi in cui sviluppa.

Yesterday we found out that when a baby is hungry... he's hungry... and frequently, there's little you can do to satisfy him without his food. And therefore yesterday, after lunch, we stopped in a little park to enjoy a beautiful day while Lorenzo ate. As you'll see, this little film is both in Italian and English.

Abbiamo scoperto che quando un piccolo bambino ha fame... ha fame... e spesso e' impossibile soddisfarlo senza la sua pappa. E allora ieri, dopo pranzo, ci siamo fermati in un piccolo parco per godere una bellissima giornata mentre Lorenzo mangiava. Come vedrete, questo piccolo filmato e' in Italiano e Inglese.

Each day there's a new revelation... we noticed that it's nearly impossible to watch a DVD without being interrupted by Lorenzo's screams. Fifteen minutes? Maybe... but we're always interrupted. The problem might be trying to watch them during the evening - maybe it would be easier during the day when Lorenzo is a little calmer (the hours between 5:00 and 11:00 are a bit crazy!?)

We also found out that we use a ton of products

38 oz cans of infant formula don't last
We feel like we're using a dozen diapers and 30-40 Pampers wipes each day
Soap... who would've expected it but, yes, we use gallons of soap to clean his bottles
And to use the soap, we use special brushes to clean the bottles... after 1-2 weeks, they fall apart.
Then there's detergent... we wash and wash his clothes.

But once we play with Lorenzo and see that he's enjoying himself everything... absolutely everything makes it worthwhile.

Ogni giorni c'e' una nuova rivelazione... abbiamo notato che e' quasi impossibile guardare un DVD senza essere interrotti dagli gridi di Lorenzo. Quindici minuti? Forse... ma siamo sempre interrotti. Il problemo puo' essere tentare di guardargli durante la sera - forse e' piu' facile durante il giorno quando Lorenzo e' un po' piu' calmo (le ore dalle 17:00 alle 23:00 sono un po' pazzesche!?).

Abbiamo anco scoperto che usiamo un sacco di prodotti...

I barattoli di latte formulato (1.078 kg) non durano.
Ci pare che stiamo usando una dozzina di pannolini e trenta o quaranta salviettine di Pampers ogni giorno.
Sapone... chi lo aspettava ma, si, usiamo galloni di sapone pulendo tutti i biberon
E per usare il sapone, usiamo delle spazzole particolari che dopo una o due settimane, cascano a pezzi
Poi c'e' detersivo... laviamo e laviamo i suoi vestiti.

Pero' quando giochiamo con Lorenzo e si vede che si diverte, tutto... assolutamente tutto vale la pena.

Just around the corner from our neighborhood is a Methodist church known for hosting an annual pumpkin patch. Since the weather was so perfect (if you live in Houston, you know what we mean), we decided to meet up with Vanessa and Abbilyn for some pictures. Well... Lorenzo decided he didn't want anything to do with the paparazzi... rather than hamming it up for the cameras, he decided to cry (or sleep). Oh well... we'll go back this weekend. At least we got a few shots...

Due passi dal nostro quartiere c'e' una chiesa Metodista che e' nota per avere un "pumpkin patch"... un campo pieno di zucche che si comprano come decorazioni per autunno o per Halloween. Siccome il tempo era cosi' stupendo (temperature perfette!), abbiamo deciso di incontrare Vanessa e Abbilyn per qualche foto. Be... Lorenzo ha deciso che non aveva tempo per i paparazzi... invece di sorridere, he deciso di piangere (o dormire). E va bene... ritorneremo questo fine settimana. Almeno abbiamo scattato qualche foto.

OK... so Lorenzo is 10 pounds, 2 ounces... that's in the 67th percentile. He's also 21.5 inches long (although the nurse first measured him at 22 inches - 68 percent - so I'm not sure which is really correct). Anyway, that's right at the 50th percentile. I found a web page that allows you register and then keep track of growth long-term. Not too heavy considering that the other day he drank 29.5 oz of formula.

Va bene... allora Lorenzo pesa 4.63 kg... piu' grande di 67 percento di altri bambini Americani. E' anche 54.6 centimetri (pero' la prima volta che la infermiera lo ha misurato era 55.9 cm - 68 percento - ... non siamo sicuri quale e' la misura corretta)... proprio a 50 percento. Ho anche trovato un sito dove uno puo' registrate tutti i dettagli ogni mese. Molto comodo. Non e' troppo pesanto considerando che l'altro giorno ha bevuto piu' di 870 ml di latte formulato.

Today I found a bottle of wine called "Mommy's Time Out", apparently marketed to moms... the back of the label says that the makers know that being a mom is a tough job and that the wine is intended to provide a break. Something like that. Anyway, it's produced in Italy and is made from 70% Garganega and 30% Pinot Grigio. Good stuff.

Lorenzo was relatively busy this weekend... he dined at a French restaurant, he saw all his granparents, he enjoyed a cup of cappuccino (in a cup larger than his head)... what adventures! His nonna also found out Lorenzo's ferocity when he's hungry.

Lorenzo era abbastanza occupato questo fine settimana... ha cenato a un ristorante Francese, ha visto tutti is suoi nonni, ha goduto una tazza di cappuccino (in una tazza piu' grande della sua testa)... che avventure! La sua nonna ha anche scoperto la ferocita' di Lorenzo quando ha fame.

It's 9:30 and we're sitting in a dark bedroom... Selena is seated with Lorenzo as he sucks away on a bottle and I'm writing this entry. If we're lucky, Lorenzo will sleep until 1:30... four hours. Let's hope for the best. Each evening is different... sometimes, he cries after he eats and we don't have any time to taste a little bite of dinner. Other evenings he's calmer and it's possible for us to eat and relax. I have a feeling that tonight is going to be a bit difficult... Thank God tomorrow is Sunday! Tomorrow morning I'll go to church to say hello to our friends while Selena stays with Lorenzo. I think we'll change roles next week.

Sone le 21:30 e stiamo seduti in una camera da letto scura... Selena e' seduta con Lorenzo che succhia al suo biberon mentre io scrivo questa entrata. Se siamo fortunati, Lorenzo dormira' fino a 1:30... quattre ore. Speriamo bene. Ogni sera e' diversa... certe volte piange dopo che mangia e noi non abbiamo tempo di assaggiare piu' di un bocconcino di cena. Altre sere e' piu tranquillo ed e' possibile mangiare e rilassare. Mi pare che stanotte sara' un po' difficile... Grazie a Dio che domani e' Domenica. Domani mattina andro' a chiesa per salutare i nostri amici mentre Selena sta' con Lorenzo. Penso che prossima settimana lei andra' ed io staro' a casa.

A typical afternoon for Lorenzo. That sound you hear is a CD of "rain"... we're not quite sure if it works or if it calms him down. He continues to eat like a hungry bear - eating as much as a typical two month old. He's also very strong... changing a diaper is a little fight with kicks flying in every direction.
